Type-2 diabetic looking for guaranteed-acceptance

Type-2 diabetes is common in NZ. Cover is available; structure matters.

You have type-2 diabetes (with or without insulin). Underwritten products will ask about HbA1c levels, complications, and medication; guaranteed-acceptance products skip the questions but apply waiting periods. The trade-off is upfront approval vs immediate cover.

Who this scenario fits

  • Type-2 diabetes (well-controlled or otherwise)
  • Want cover without lengthy medical underwriting
  • Comfortable with a 12–24 month waiting period for natural-cause cover

What to look for

  • Guaranteed-acceptance products — no diabetes questions
  • Underwritten products that don't exclude diabetes-related complications (rare; most do)
  • Accelerated Funeral Benefit triggered by terminal-diagnosis (helpful with diabetes complications)
  • Cover amount sized to the funeral cost, not the insurer maximum

Watch out for

  • Most underwritten products will load premiums or exclude cardiovascular / renal complications of diabetes
  • Waiting-period death from a diabetes complication on a guaranteed-acceptance product = premium refund only, not the sum insured
  • Insulin-dependent (type 1 or insulin-dependent type 2) underwriting is materially stricter — guaranteed-acceptance is usually the practical path
